Yes, it took a lot of time until we really get into the heart of the case but thanks to the writing style those were truly amusing pages. Although it is already book number 6 in the series it can perfectly well be read as a stand - alone. There is enough retrospection to let us, the first readers, to understand that something happened in the past that has consequences in the present, so that this subplot was understandable and also clear why it was there in this story.
The storyline was meticulously planned and it took time for all the elements to fell into place, it was not at all rushed or pushed forward, the author let the events happen at their own pace. Yes, I was hooked and yes, I am for sure going to read other books in this series. Copy provided by the publisher in return for an honest review. A genuinely brilliant forensic thriller. The deceased has lain undiscovered for well over a year until the crew of the demolition crew found it in the beams of the building.

While busy examining the body, the forensic pathologist falls through some broken timbers and lands in a room that contains two more well-preserved bodies. It takes time to discover the pathologist as the room he landed in has been cleverly hidden by blocking up the entrance.
This is not a straight forward case for Dr Hunter. Trying to discover who the victims are and more importantly, the method used to kill them seems almost impossible. I was fascinated by the work involved in identifying the bodies, their ages, their sex and build. Simon Beckett has drawn his characters as if they are real people. Not many authors have the knack to do this. I felt as if I walked into a room where they were gathered, I'd immediately be able to identify each one.
Read it and see for yourself how brilliant this book truly is. Treebeard Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review. I like the David Hunter books, ever since the beginning it's been a great series and it just gets better. This book had everything, suspense, atmosphere, old part demolished hospital, possible ghosts, decomposing bodies David received a call to examine a decomposed body in the loft part of St Judes Hospital which was being demolished. The loft was only a small room and the floor was pretty unstable.

The power had been cut to the hospital so all the corridors were dark and eerie with the signs of the departments and wards still there although the hospital had been closed down.
There was hardly room for the pathologist, the police and the arc lights to brighten the room as well as David. From what David could see the body had been preserved pretty well as it was quite hot where they were and the body had been wrapped up. It was possible they had died elsewhere then moved to this spot. As they uncovered more of the body, they noticed a gaping hole where the stomach was, the only wound so far that was noticeable. Also, within the cavity there were several little bones, it looked like it could be a foetus therefore making the corpse female.
This is just the start of this engrossing story and it will pull you in from the start, it did me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It felt like I was walking the corridors of the creepy St Judes hospital along with the characters. It was very descriptive writing and a really good story line. A lot of research must have gone into this for so much detail but it paid off for such a terrific story.
My thanks to Random House U. This is the sixth in the Dr. David Hunter series. Late one evening Dr David Hunter is summoned to an abandoned hospital that is awaiting demolition. A partially mummified body has been discovered in the loft. Hunter is My thanks to Random House U. Hunter is unable to say how long the corpse has been there. However, when part of the loft floor collapses a hidden room is revealed, containing some beds.
Some of them are occupied! What should have been a straightforward case suddenly becomes a nightmare. No more plot details in order to avoid spoilers. I will say though that it really delivers on the twists and shocks. This proved a fascinating novel full of visceral detail. Beckett builds up the tension very effectively and I was gripped throughout. As the team prepare the body for removal from the site, a floor gives way beneath their feet.
Some of the team suddenly find themselves in a sealed room within the hospital previously unseen.

But there are two dead bodies strapped to the beds. The novel deals with the professional lives of the forensic experts and the police officers involved on the case. There are ties to a local woman often seen on the grounds of the hospital, whom Dr David Hunter makes it his mission to befriend. However, Lola has different ideas about if she wants to be befriended, proving to be quite the battleaxe.
There are rumours and speculation of a hospital ghost — The Grey lady which is buried in ww2 history. The story is very darks and grisly in parts and actually left me with heart palpitations. The authors descriptive writing done so perfectly. This is a complex case with many twists. Most definitely not for the faint hearted due to the incredibly dark subject matter. Another of my favourite authors and another in the David Hunter series.
I was so excited when it landed in my inbox and I am glad to say that I was not disappointed. Dr David Hunter is a Forensic Anthropologist, he examines skeletons to find out how they died and a lot more besides. Hunter is called in when a mummified body is found in the loft of St Judes' a derelict hospital that is due for demolition. This is only the start as more mummified remains are found.
Also his nemesis Grace Strachan h Another of my favourite authors and another in the David Hunter series. Also his nemesis Grace Strachan has been seen, the Last time they met he nearly lost his life at her hands. This is a real page turner and gripped me from the first page. This book is atmospheric, creepy, chilling and impossible to put down.
The German Gothic Novel in Anglo-German Perspective
This author has the knack of drawing the reader in, the amount of detail he goes into is fascinating and enhances the readers pleasure. As for the climax when the killer was finally revealed OMG it blew me away and definitely not what I was expecting. If this is the first book you have read in this series I Am sure you will be searching out for more in this fantastic, gripping, addictive and very informative series. An easy five stars and so Highly Recommended.
Hunter story style I so love is back! It's delicate, focus on every detail, moving slowly and creepily. It dragged me under its horror blanket as it always does except book 4. You have to pay attention to every detail David noticed, and think along with him. Then it will make you feel like you are the one who follows this case yourself. It's a great feeling. You may want to hit him sometime Dr. You may want to hit him sometimes, but well, at any moment people can be stubborn and make a mistake. Any comment about the story of this book will be a spoiler, so please read it by yourself.
Just know that it's so worth your time. There are not many actions in Dr. Hunter's series I thought the author has tried to increase it in book 4 which I personally don't like. If you like a suspense-thrill book with high action scenes, this book or this series is not for you. But if you like something quiet, creepy, dark, and not give you much of appetite actually you may throw up is you were eating , this book is a perfect one.
Dr David Hunter life is going well. He is in a happy relationship and he is in demand again as a police consultant again. Then David received a call asking for his help. A body has been found in the awaiting to be demolition St Jude's Hospital. And that she was pregnant. Then Dr David Hunter life is going well. A sealed-off chamber, still with beds inside.
Some of the beds occupied. It looks like a straightforward case, but it becomes a twisted nightmare that threatens everyone around David. The investigation springs more surprises, one thing is certain. This was a complete departure for me in terms of genre. Boy am I glad I did! The mystery unfolded piece by piece with shocking moments along the way. The characters were interesting and engaging enough to keep me invested in their well-being along the way, without ever detracting from the fast paced and well wri This was a complete departure for me in terms of genre.
The characters were interesting and engaging enough to keep me invested in their well-being along the way, without ever detracting from the fast paced and well written plot line. I loved it so much I went back and ordered the rest of the series so I can catch up! I really love the David Hunter series.
They are so well written and full of detail. Hunter is a forensic expert, and when a body is discovered in the loft of an abandoned hospital, he is called in to help investigators. The body was that of a woman and she had been pregnant. When an officer falls through the loft into the walled up room below, 2 more bodies are discovered and they had obvious signs of torture. There are many colourful and interesting characters in this novel and all have agendas I really love the David Hunter series. There are many colourful and interesting characters in this novel and all have agendas it seems.
This is a really good series. This book ties up some loose ends from previous books. David investigates bodies found in an abandoned hospital. Along the way, he makes some enemies and gets into some scrapes. There are two explosive parts in the ending that are very exciting. I'm looking forward to the next David Hunter book. There is nothing more wonderful for a thriller enthusiast, such as myself, to have the setting of a thriller to take place in a creepy psych ward or dilapidated hospital.

Our hero, forensic pathologist David Hunter, is called in to take a look at the first victim that was found. When an unexpected accident happens while on the scene, a hidden room is exposed with two more bodies.
Since it was unclear whether the two additional corpses were related in their deaths to the first body found, a second forensic expert is called in. As in any good thriller, not everything in the The Scent of Death is as it seems and St. James and its morbid occupants will become a nightmare for Dr. Hunter that he will not soon forget. I would have to say that the The Scent of Death now tops my favorite for best in the series. It will make you want to reread Written in Bone all over again.
